Quitting smoking solo is not a good approach. It can be done, but usually ends in failure. You really need to have your friends and family onboard for you. At the very least you need one person whom you can count on when it gets tough, and whom you can talk to and get some good advice. Humans are social animals, and we all need other people. We have strong moments and weak moments, and fortunately, they usually come at different times than the same ones for our friends. When you are dying for a cigarette your friend can sympathize with what you are going through, and at the same time be able to point out why your temporary discomfort will be worth it. Sometimes this makes the difference between being smoke free, and being a smoker. Be aware of the saboteur. Unfortunately, many of those whom we think are our friends, will not be happy to see us quit smoking. They may smoke themselves, and your quitting can stir up all sorts of low level thought conflicts in their minds. They may feel guilt for smoking, and will have that eased if you fail to quit. Who knows all the dark secrets of the human mind? Just watch out for the one who offers you cigarettes at weak moments, or offers advice that will lead you back into the smoky world you are trying to escape from. |
