Makes 63
Ingredients
Baklava
1 pound filo pastry
3 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, melted
1 pound nuts, chopped (1/2 pine & 1/2 pecan is good! -
or pecan, or pecan and walnut or...your choice!)
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon, optional
Syrup
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup Karo corn syrup
3/4 cup water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon rosewater (optional - do not use cinnamon with rose water!)
Directions for Baklava
Grease a large pan, jelly roll or other, approximately
14x18-inches. Preheat oven to 400
degrees. Chop nuts in food processor and add 1 tablespoon sugar and cinnamon.
Melt butter.
Put 1/3 of filo in bottom of pan. Spread nut mixture over pastry and press
down with fingers
or back of spoon. Put remaining pastry on top of nuts. Cut in desired diamond
shapes with sharp
knife. Pour hot butter over all. Bake in lower part of oven at 400 degrees
for 20 minutes.
Move pan to top part of oven for 35 minutes at 250 degrees.
Pour hot syrup over hot Baklava. Cool well before cutting.
Syrup
Boil Karo, water, sugar and lemon juice for 10
minutes. Add rose water after boiled,
while hot, before pouring over pastry. (do not add rose water if you are using
cinnamon with the nuts)
