Scallop Facts

You can treat yourself to the sweet taste of scallops all year round.  And they won't sabotage your healthy eating plans since they are relatively low in fat and weigh in at only 100 calories for a 3-ounce poached serving.

There are usually three types of scallops available.  Sea scallops are the largest, followed by Bay scallops and Calico scallops.  The meat of these morsels can be creamy white, tan, or creamy pink.  Scallops are usually shucked right after harvest and are sold fresh or frozen.

Choose scallops that are firm and free of cloudy liquid and have a sweet aroma.  Spoiled scallops have a strong sulfur odor.  Store fresh scallops in the refrigerator covered with their own liquid in a covered container for up to 2 days.  Keep scallops as healthy and fresh-tasting as possible by cooking them in little or no oil or fat.  Try them broiled, poached, grilled, stir-fried or pan fried.
